Strong Delusion

“And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:”
II Thessalonians 2:11

Over the last few years, the battle has been raging across America over so-called “gay” rights. While there is no concrete evidence to support the notion, it is sad that the idea that people are born with homosexual tendencies has taken hold in academic circles, as well as with the general public. Without this widespread belief, there would be no logical grounds for creating civil rights protecting this lifestyle choice.

In spite of the immense amount of money that has been spent trying to isolate a “gay” gene, none has been found. The evidence actually points to child developmental issues and victimization of small children as major causes of the problem. In the majority of cases where someone struggles with sexual orientation, there has been molestation at an early age. Divorce, abandonment, and alienation by the same-gender parent have also been identified as contributing factors. To add to the confusion, these events can take place so early in the developmental stages that a person can have little to no memory of what has taken place, thus, leaving them with the impression that they have “always been that way.”

In spite of mounting evidence to the contrary, the American people have somehow bought into this misguided notion that “they are born that way” in much the same way that we have swallowed the theory of evolution. It is a theory. It cannot be proved, but it is accepted as absolute and indisputable truth worthy of our complete faith and acceptance, and anyone who suggests that intelligent design might have been possible is immediately written off as an uneducated idiot.

The Bible is clear that homosexuality is a sin just like adultery is sin. However, anyone who speaks out against this particular sin is accused of being hateful. It is generally assumed that if you speak out against homosexuality, you are looking down on the people who are committing that sin. While it is possible for someone to have that attitude, it is not a Biblical outlook. We are commanded not to judge, but to love and to restore.

As sinners we need salvation, first and foremost. Then we need to begin obeying God’s Word and growing in grace. What any sinner needs is God’s love. God loves the sinner, but He hates the sin. Why does He hate the sin? Because of the harm it brings in the lives of His creatures.

There is great emotional pain connected with this ungodly lifestyle. There are unhealthy and potentially life-threatening consequences to this unnatural behavior. Every sin brings its own unique form of bondage. Sin is a trap; sin enslaves. To tell someone who is struggling with sin that they are “born that way” is to remove all hope. It is to enslave them, and force them deeper into bondage. This is truly hateful. In reality, the statement, “you were born that way,” is both hateful and harmful.

The proponents of “gay” marriage reject the teachings of God’s Word. They say that the punishment of death associated with homosexuality in the Mosaic Law is extreme. This demonstrates a lack of understanding of the Bible and of God’s program in general. During the time of Moses, the people of Israel were governed by God Himself. We call this a theocracy. God gave commandments to Moses and Moses gave them to the people. God is the Creator, and by virtue of His great power He has the right to decide what is appropriate behavior for His creatures. When He is governing, He can decide what the appropriate punishment is. Many sins were punishable by death during that time. Our nation has never been a theocracy, but it was certainly founded upon the principles of God’s Word.

It is sad that so many people believe this lie. It is harmful to our society in general, but the real victims of this kind of thinking are those struggling with this enslaving sin. They need to know the truth that God loves them. He can free them and give them the true peace and happiness they so deeply desire.
